Ritter's plan a boon for bureaucracy

...On Friday, Gov. Bill Ritter granted the unions most of what they wanted with a stroke of the pen, in one of the biggest changes in state government in years.

It's a mistake, in our view, that threatens to raise the cost of government while reducing its ability to react to a changing environment.

The good news is that Ritter's executive order preserves an important freedom for individual workers, ensures that politicians retain control over the budget, and ostensibly bars the unions from authorizing strikes.

But not only is Ritter's course full of risks to the taxpayers, it wasn't even necessary to achieve the goals he publicly links to the plan...
