Awash in a wave of illegal immigration, our citizens should--at the very least--be able to expect their state government to safeguard basic institutions and services against abuse by those who have entered our country illegally. Our justice system should not be a revolving door for illegal immigrants caught committing yet other crimes, and our democratic process should be secured against fraud.
-
Public Safety. Few government responsibilities are more important than that of upholding public safety. Where illegal immigration impacts public safety, we have a duty to take action.
- Harsher penalties for driving without a license - We need to assure tragedy does not strike again because unlicensed drivers are recklessly roaming the streets. (Bill sponsors: Sen. Dave Schulthies and Rep. Kent Lambert)
- Denying plea bargaining for illegal immigrants - Our courts need to crackdown on immigrants who little or no regard for our laws. (Bill sponsors: Sen. Mark Scheffel)
- Denying bond to felons in the country illegally- Immigrants who are a menace to our society should have to pay a stiffer penalty for breaking the law. (Bill sponsors: Sen. Shawn Mitchell and Rep. Bob Gardner)
- Integrity of Voting. Few rights in our nation are as sacred as the fundamental right to vote.
- Requiring photo identification to vote at all polling places - Currently, a copy of a utility bill, a cable bill or a telephone bill is sufficient to prove a person’s identity at the polls. That lax standard isn’t acceptable for an employer, for a bank or even for a liquor store: it shouldn’t be acceptable for our voting system. (Bill sponsors: Sen. Scott Renfroe and Rep. Ken Summers)
- Requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote - Only citizens have the right to vote in the United States. This proposal would ensure that everyone who registers to vote has the right to do so in the first place. (Bill sponsors: Sen. Mark Scheffel and Rep. Frank McNulty)
