Excerpt from Rep. Frank McNulty's e-mail newsletter

2/26/07

My colleague and fellow freshman, Representative Bob Gardner (R-Colo Spgs), reflected most accurately after a long night where the Democrat-lead House Judiciary Committee killed bills aimed at cracking down on criminals and approved a bill to eliminate the death penalty in Colorado.

Rep. Gardner said that there is a divide emerging between those who stand with victims on the House Judiciary Committee and those who are more concerned with the rights of defendants.

My bill to send child sex offenders away for a long time the first time was killed that night along with Rep. Spencer Swalm’s (R-Centennial) bill requiring sex offenders to register their electronic identification information as more predators turn to the Internet to carry out their heinous crimes.

I am equally concerned with Governor Ritter’s proposal to cut the Department of Corrections’ budget by $8 million.  Now is not the time to make our communities less safe by sending offenders back out into our communities before they serve their time.

I am proud to stand with those who are fighting to make our communities safer, and I am particularly thankful to those who came to the Capitol to support my effort to protect Colorado’s children.  Know that I will continue to the fight to crackdown on those who would do our children harm.

I am equally proud to say that our principled, conservative leaders at the Capitol are standing with the victims.  There really should be no choice.
