According to a recent study by the Colorado Contractor's Association, the state's funding for highways is failing to keep pace with with the rising costs of construction. As a result, Colorado taxpayers are getting less bang for their highway construction buck. The lower real rate of return on highway dollars means that, more than ever, the state needs to focus on filling transportation backlogs as quickly as possible. Putting off until tomorrow what we can do today is not only irresponsible, but is an increasingly poor strategy for investing in crucial infrastructure.
