Majority Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted down a measure that would have given Colorado voters and voice in the medical marijuana debate.
“Citizens don’t want the dispensaries and this would have given them a chance to have their voice heard,” said Sen. Scott Renfroe, R-Greeley, who introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 5.
There are over 1,000 marijuana dispensaries in Colorado that now exist in a legal gray area. They weren’t included in the 2000 law approved by voters that legalized medical marijuana. In fact, most have been opened in the last year since the Obama administration said it wouldn’t crack down on people in compliance with state marijuana laws.
SCR 5 would have required individuals, or caregivers, provide medical marijuana to patients—effectively getting rid medical marijuana retail outlets and grow operations.
