Ritter should veto bill pushed by plaintiffs bar

      We generally like the principle of "loser pays" in lawsuits. If it could be extended to more types of cases, it might discourage frivolous litigation and thus reduce the backlog in the courts as well as save many people from needless legal expenses.

      Currently, the loser-pays doctrine is mostly created by statute to cover specific areas, such as employer-employee relations, where it seems to work best.

Senator Kester's bill to spur job growth for all of Colorado Print E-mail

Senator Ken Kester, R-Las Animas, who was a small businessman for decades in the Lower Arkansas Valley, understands that challenge about as well as anyone in the legislature.

He has introduced a bill that provides for a refundable tax credit for each new job that an employer creates, as long as those jobs are above the average county wage. This bill makes it easier for small businesses to add jobs, and pay thos employees more.

      Rhetoric continues to swirl over House Bill 1072, a change to Colorado's long-standing Labor Peace Act. News articles and editorials have focused on workers' rights and the ability of unions to force so-called "closed shops"— and the business community's reaction to the impact on our economic bottom line.
