In bill before legislature, the docs deserve to win

Rocky Mountain News Editorial

The Colorado Physicians Insurance Companies (COPIC) and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association aren't often on the same page. But they do agree on one point: COPIC - the nonprofit, doctor-run medical malpractice carrier - plays hardball.

We don't think that's a problem. In fact, the forceful tactics COPIC employs in defending its members against lawsuits probably lowers the cost of practicing medicine in the state. That cuts the medical bills of all patients.

But COPIC drives trial lawyers crazy. The insurer is more likely to defend its clients in court than its competitors, and more likely to win. So it pays less in settlement costs than other providers.

Why fiddle with small-group coverage before next year?

Rocky Mountain News Editorial

4/10/07

Out there somewhere is the Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care Reform, hammering out various proposals that would change, maybe even improve, the way care is delivered in Colorado.

Rep. Summers's bill to help families afford health care Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 February 2007

Representative Ken Summers, R-Lakewood, has introduced a bill to make it easy and simple to deduct out-of-pocket health care costs from state income taxes.

Currently, filers need to itemize each expense that they wish to deduct – Republicans propose making it a simple, line-item deduction for out-of-pocket health care expenses. This easy step will help low-income families who can't afford to pay for professional tax filing assistance get the deductions they need to make health care more affordable.

Senator Mitchell's bill to fight Medicaid fraud Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 February 2007

Before we consider any expansion of our state’s budget-straining Medicaid program, it is important we find out just how accountable the program is with the money it already spends.

Senator Shawn Mitchell introduced a bill for a top-to-bottom, annual Medicaid audit – arguably, the most comprehensive ever. We need to stop those who abuse the system, and prevent them from sticking taxpayers and working families with the bill.

Unfortunately, the bill has been killed on a strict, party-line vote in committee.
