Senator Shawn Mitchell

Senator Shawn Mitchell represents Colorado State Senate District 23 which includes Adams, Broomfield Counties along with Southwest Weld County. He was elected to the Senate in 2004 after serving three terms in the Colorado House of Representatives. He currently serves as the ranking Republican on the Health and Human Services Committee.

He earned his bachelor of science from Brigham Young University. He went on to receive his juris doctor from the University of California-Berkeley.

Senator Mitchell is an attorney in a private law practice in Denver and Adams Counties. He served as Special Counsel to the Colorado Attorney General, where he was a legal policy advisor and one of the top aides to former Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton. He also represented Colorado in fighting criminal appeals in the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.

Senator Mitchell is a former Senior Fellow at the Independence Institute, a conservative and free-market think tank in Golden. He continues to write and speak often on public policy issues. He is the president of the Colorado Chapter of the Federalist Society. He also served 3 years on the Denver Rocky Mountain News Board of Editorial Contributors. Currently, he is an adjunct professor in the Public Affairs Program at the University of Colorado – Denver.

Shawn Mitchell and his wife Yvette reside in Broomfield. They have seven children, Natalie, Matthew, Kevin, Danny, Bethany, Bradley and Jeffrey. Mitchell is an avid and experienced rock climber.
