Scheffel Stands Up for Rural Telecoms

October 26, 2012

Today, State Senator Mark Scheffel, R-Parker, sent a letter to Governor Hicklenlooper asking for his support in requesting the federal government to re-structure the mission of EAGLE-Net, a federally funded program that is jeopardizing jobs in rural Colorado.

“It is very disappointing that EAGLE-Net has chosen to compete with local businesses instead of working with them,” said Scheffel. “The federal government needs to reassess the role of EAGLE-Net to make sure that they are not going into communities that have infrastructure already in place.”

EAGLE-Net was established to provide broadband service in remote, rural and underserved areas of Colorado. Recently they have been competing against local telecom businesses, threatening to put them out of business.

“I hope that EAGLE-Net will focus on what they were originally created to do and stop threatening private companies and wasting taxpayer money,” stated Scheffel.
