Renfroe Bill to Shift Federal Lands to State Moves Forward

February 13, 2013

This week, Senator Scott Renfroe’s (R-Greeley) bill to shift management of 23 million acres of federal agricultural lands to the state passed the State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee. Renfroe’s Senate Bill 142 requires the federal government to transfer ownership of all federal lands in Colorado to the state, as was promised in Colorado’s Enabling Act.

“This is a win for education funding in Colorado,” Renfroe said. “This bill will bring $44 million per year to K-12 education.”

Renfroe continued, “this bill is a monumental step forward for the citizens of Colorado. It would allow Coloradans to take an active role in governing our own lands that exist within our borders instead of allowing the federal government to make land management decisions for us.”

Colorado would manage the lands through the State Land Board. Half of any interest and income earned from any sale of the land would go to K-12 education, and the other half would support water storage projects.
