Prescribed Burn Bill Passes Senate on Second Reading

February 26, 2013

Today, the Senate gave initial approval to Senator Ellen Roberts’s (R-Durango) bill to establish a new program to supervise prescribed burns on state lands in Colorado.

“This bill was recommended unanimously by the Lower North Fork Wildfire Commission,” Roberts said. “As Chairman of that commission, this legislation makes sure that the Department of Public Safety takes every step possible to ensure that prescribed burns never grow too large and too powerful to leave such an incredible path of destruction behind in its wake.”

Senate Bill 83 requires the division of fire prevention and control in the department of public safety to implement a prescribed burning program. It creates safety standards for conducting controlled burns, such as requiring that a certified burn manager be on site until a prescribed burn is controlled or out. The bill also establishes policies for addressing prescribed burns that escape their designated boundaries.

“It’s my hope that this bill demonstrates that we have learned the lessons of the Lower North Fork Fire,” Roberts continued. “There should be set of clear rules and responsibilities for any burn on any public lands.”
