How to write a Letter to the Editor
Letters to the editor play an important role in demonstrating your State Senator’s positive legislative efforts at the state Capitol. What follows is a brief summary of what makes a good letter and some short key points to make when writing your letter.
Short, concise letters are always more likely to be published than long ones. Be sure to keep them under 150 words. Your letter must include your full name, home address and day and evening phone numbers for the newspaper to confirm you wrote it. They typically will call or email you back within a few days to let you know if they will publish it.
Most editors prefer letters that expand on articles that have appeared in the publication or address ongoing news events. Whenever possible, it is preferable to write your letter in reaction to a story you may have seen in the paper. Some examples may be to tie your Senator’s legislative efforts in to stories about taxes, the state’s economy, state leadership, etc.
Letters to the editor can be sent in to nearly any publication from HOA newsletters, local weekly papers, to the Denver Post, or even local magazines.
If a publication does not have a clear letter to the editor policy outlined on their web site, try to send the letter to an editor’s email address. Typically these emails will look like: editor@NameofPublicationHere.com.
If you need help drafting your letter or help with ideas for a letter to the editor do not hesitate to call the office at 303-866-3931, we are happy to help!
