Grantham’s Peace Officer Bill Passes Senate

February 6, 2013

Fort Carson police officers are one step closer to becoming designated peace officers in Colorado thanks to Senate Bill 5 sponsored by Senator Kevin Grantham (R-Cañon City). Currently, jurisdiction for Fort Carson police is limited to on base only. Grantham’s bill will allow Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified officers to work within the same authority as Colorado Springs police officers.

“This is a straight forward bill that will allow Fort Carson Police officers to seek state prosecution cases involving non-military personnel who commit offenses on base,” said Grantham. “It will improve the standard of training and consistency with other POST agencies in the region.”

SB 5 unanimously passed in the Senate this week. It now goes to the House for consideration where it is sponsored by Rep. Dan Nordberg (R-Colorado Springs) and Rep. Lois Landgraf (R-Fountain).
